Very sad, spartan music from the heart of the south. Atlanta’s 86 specialized in a sort of empty, melodic post-punk and no better example of it exists than this first 45 from 1983. There is just a weird space in these songs that is conveyed in the areas between the guitar riffing and the bass and drums. Singer Ken Schenk is a crooner and his vocals hang over the spartan instrumentation and make the music sound even more forlorn and lonesome. The lyrics are about being useless and being judged. The whole thing is a super-heavy duty bummer. I love it! Drummer Mac McNally ended up playing in Jesus Lizard and you can hear the similarities in the drumming. It’s hard to tell much else that is similar though. Before Jesus Lizard, 86 was a surprisingly prolific band who released a number of albums on the super-cool Fundamental label back in the day. I remember seeing their Provocation LP in bargain bins for years in the Midwest. Now I don’t see them at all. This could be because I don’t know where any bargain bins are. All the record stores have gone disco.

Absolutely amazing band from New Zealand that a lot of folks in the States at least, are completely unaware of. I first heard them on the super-cool Hate Your Neighbors compilation way back whenever and at that time I didn’t really know all of the formal connections around the band. When Nocturnal Projections are mentioned, they are frequently compared to Joy Division which is off the mark in my opinion and is probably due to the fact that singer Peter Jeffries suffered from epilepsy much like Ian Curtis. Obviously comparing the two bands’ music based solely on this similarity would seem to reek of “lazy journalism” but who am I to judge? I’m but a lowly music blogger and I have no PHD in rock-n-roll ethnography. Anyhoo, where Joy Division were stark and depressing, Nocturnal Projections were a more joyous clatter and even though the churning bass lines and ringing guitars may have similarities to Hook and Sumner, the production on the Nocturnal Projections releases is far more punk rock and full of life than anything Martin Hannett would have cooked up. Jeffries voice as well, is an infectious, treble-filled warble and has none of the traditional gothic overtones associated with Joy Division-styled bands . Nocturnal Projections released this single and a few LP’s and EP’s during their brief two year existence. After they disbanded, brothers Peter and Graeme Jeffries went on to form This Kind of Punishment who released a series of great albums in the 1980′s on Flying Nun. Peter also recorded a number of excellent releases on a variety labels including XPressway and Ajax as well as playing in the short lived Plagal Grind. Graeme recorded solo and then formed the very prolific Cakekitchen. But this is where it all started. Didja get all that?

A solid 7inch by the great post-punk hope of Yugoslavia, Šarlo Akrobata. I suspect the A-Side of this single was a bid for commercial acceptance. It’s New Wave Reggae, very much in the vein of what the early Police were doing and that is well and good, I guess. A lot of the Yugoslavian bands of the day had a thing for reggae and/or ska. However, it is the B-Side of this single that really shows off what I love about Šarlo Akrobata and that is their similarity to The Minutemen. Seriously, listen to how choppy and and treble-filled the guitar lines are. Listen to how thumpin’ and hard the bass is. Then listen to how pounding the drums are. Šarlo Akrobata were a three man band just like Boon, Hurley and Watt. Two of the guys barked out lyrics. Its very similar….just a bit more sprawling and “post-punk”. Šarlo Akrobata released a great LP called Bistriji Ili Tuplji Čovek Biva Kad … and there a lot of awesome Minutemen-styled jams on it. On the great Jugoton Record label which was the national record label for the nation of Yugoslavia during the commie era. For more evidence of my Minutemen comparison, check this out:

It’s so sad, when you lose the one you love….

What the fuck just happened!?! So Last Days went down. I could go into a lot of explanation as to what happened but to hell with it, I’m on a new hosting company and hopefully these shenanigans wont occur in the future. With that said, I offer no real apologies because Last Days has always been a one-man show. In the end it suffers from the fact that the one man in question is me and I have neither tons of funding to pour into the site nor tons of time to give it the love it sometimes needs. Infrequent instability seems to be a reasonable payoff for keeping it DIY.

All of these technical trials and tribulations have caused me to ponder on the very nature of this here lil’ blog and I have decided there are going to be a few changes to this site over the next few months. I was planning these anyway but having to switch service providers sort of forced my hand. One change is that I am going to be featuring less old releases. This is primarily because I have run out of things to post. This is especially true with Hardcore, a genre I love but (at least the vintage 79-89 era) is all over the internet on blogs that are waaaay more hardcore than Joe Stumble could ever be. That’s why HC has faded off this site; not because I don’t love it but because there are just so many other sites doing it that I don’t see the point in being redundant. I also don’t see the point in being redundant.

Get that?

<object width="320" height="257" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 5px 10px 10px 0px;>Conversely there are a ton of great new punk and hardcore acts around today. Acts like Crime Desire, Total Abuse, Cloak/Dagger, Red Dons, Condominium and Much Worse, all featured on the podcast below are totally brilliant and I would rather be featuring them because they are young, new and might actually appreciate someone spreading the word. In my own hometown, there have been amazing bands like Spelling Bee, Egg Chef and Glass Teeth who have all started playing shows in the last few years and are really pushing the boundaries of what can even be considered hardcore. Louisville and it’s Noise Pollution label are still going strong and songs below by The Straight A’s and Second Story Man are great examples of what is going on in the here and now. All over the world, cool bands are popping up and playing music that should be on Last Days, from the post-punk screech of Cripple and Casino out of Zagreb, Croatia to the indescribably creepy Botched Fairytale from Longford, Ireland. From the always amazing Fucked Up out of Toronto, Canada to the minimalist fun of The Pop Fosters out of Wakefield, UK. From the GODHEAD that is Normal Man outta Leeds UK all the way down to Christchurch, NZ with the earthquake shake of The Transistors. No Wave, Hardcore, Synth Punk (check out Television Spaceman! and of course YACHT), Punk Rock, Post-Punk, Post-Hardcore (Tera Melos), Minimalism and Drone (Tone Rodent), Last Days Music…whatever you want to call it, is getting more and more prevalent daily and I am getting tired of not writing about it because I am trying to focus solely on old releases that are increasingly available on 100,000 other blogs out there.

Compounding this is my imminent move to New Zealand which is happening on November 18th. Once there, I wanna hear the new noise in that area of the world. Just like here in the States, I am not really interested in what the “big indies” are pushing but instead I want to find out what’s really going on in a country that has always had a profound musical effect on me. I don’t see the point of keeping Last Days going if I am going to spend my time in New Zealand posting Black Flag 7inches.

<object width="320" height="257" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 5px 10px 10px 0px;>So my point is that I am going to remove the self-imposed limitations placed on Last Days. I am going to focus more on newer bands and only post old releases when they are hard to find on other blogs and out of print. I am also going to do more regionally themed podcasts of old bands because I think my podcasts are pretty cool. I already have Chicago, St Louis, Indiana, Yugoslavia, and San Francisco ones in the works. So more reviews of new releases and more podcasts of old releases. Maybe I am wrong about all of this but who gives a fuck. That is the luxury of being a one-man show.

Speaking of being a one man show, I am also considering letting other folks post podcasts on here. Like I said, the self-imposed limitations were starting to make me feel claustrophobic.

One other thing, although I am not necessarily sorry for the time away, I did miss everybody and I hope you all missed me. Cuz I’m a sensitive guy and all….

Tokow Boys

A common refrain I have heard over the years is that France is not a “rock-n-roll country”. Someone even pointed out once that talking about French Rock-n-Roll is kinda like talking about British cooking, which is a pretty witty statement. It is also completely false. In both senses really, since I kinda love Bangers and Mash.

And who gives a fuck about Rock-n-Roll anyway? If you wanna Rock-n-Roll, go find a copy of Patrick Swayze’s 1989 classic Road House. I’m sure the Blockbuster Video currently going out of business down the street from your house has a fresh copy on clearance. Pick up Footloose while you are at it and you can kick off your Sunday shoes all you want. What the French are really good at, in my humble opinion is something altogether more sublime and I have the podcasts to prove it.

Yes, in honor of La Fête Nationale, Joe Stumble and the inimitable Constance Legeay, caretaker of A Very Special Story , have cooked up three podcasts of pure Gallic Genius. These podcasts will lay to rest once and for all, the myth that France somehow checked out during the Punk / New Wave heyday of 76-86. In fact, when it came to cold-wave and minimal synth, France not only contributed but actually owned it. Don’t believe me? Listen to Taxi Boy, Marquis De Sade, Orchestre Rouge, The Comix and Ruth and tell me otherwise.

And guess what? They had some great Rock-n-Roll bands as well. Brilliant stuff like Les Olivensteins, Les Spurts, Oberkampf, Gasoline and Strychnine. So, as is usually the case, the commonly held belief is a bunch of nonsense. Help us all debunk history and check out these podcasts. Vive Le France!

Additional credit is in order here. First of all, let me reiterate that these could not have been done without the help of Constance Legeay. She desperately tried to school me on French pronunciation but I cannot be taught! I am a brick wall when it comes to languages and I pronounce everything like it is Spanish because that is the only other language I know. Constance also gave me some great suggestions about song choices and bands as well. An awesome collaboration! So check out A Very Special Story . It’s a great blog and website. Currently featuring a piece on Burzum!

Secondly, I would not have gone off the deep end with this music and been inspired enough to make these podcasts if it had not been for three very critical comps of the past few years. First of which was, BIPPP: French Synth Wave 1979-85, which I reviewed back in 2008 here on this blog. Second, So Young But So Cold: Underground French Music 1977-83 and third, Jeunes Gens Modernes. All three of these are crucial in proving that bands like Metal Urbain were not exceptions to drab music scene but instead bonafide parts of a cultural and musical movement that produced an amazing amount of under-recognized and under-appreciated bands. Appréciez!

The first song on this 7inch is great snarly new wave post-punk from Manchester, UK that none other than Julian Cope considers “a classic song” that “deserves more attention than it got back in 1981.” Unfortunately, Julian knows very little about the band and if Julian Cope knows very little about a band then you can certainly expect Joe Stumble to know even less. Even though I know nothing about the origins or background of Colors Out Of Time, I do agree with Cope’s assessment of the music. This is primo shit. Maybe a tad late in the “style section” since by 1981, UK post-punk sounded a lot less like this and a lot more like Haircut 100, but the fickle nature of trends become obscured over time and the musical cream rises to the top. This is why nobody is rocking Phil Collins anymore. So from the 20/20 perspective, Colors Out Of Time sounds precisely in the moment. Rock Section does (as Mr Cope points out) sound like early Comsat Angels. But I think it is even punchier and more raw than the Angels. Maybe I should re-visit the early Comsat Angels. Mambo Girls Mambo is my least favorite and the most dark-wave. But it is still pretty impressive and reminds me a bit of Pop Group. The only song on the B-Side is entitled Dancing With Joy. The title is ironic. It sounds like The Stranglers, The Mekons and Wah! at their most downbeat. My theory is that this band must have gotten lost in the shuffle in Manchester due to the fact that at this time, Manchester was on fire with great music. Cos I’ve seen 24 Hour Party People. So I know what I am talking about. Right?

One of the more obscure acts on the amazing Subterranean label out of the post-punk paradise that was San Francisco in the early 1980s, Pre-Fix were actually a Tuscon, AZ band. Its not surprising that many of us have mistaken them for a SF act. The music is completely in synch with seminal SF acts like Inflatable Boy Clams and Bay of Pigs. Apparently, this was recorded in San Francisco by the engineer who produced a lot of the early Tuxedomoon stuff so there is a San Fran connection beyond the label. I found this all out while doing research on the band. The A-Side of this single was the inspiration for John Manyjar’s amazing Underneathica blog and there is information on the single there. The single is also available on the always impressive Systems of Romance blog. So why am I posting it here? Because I already have typed this much and I am too far into this post to exit easily. So what can I add about Pre-Fix that these two awesome web resources haven’t already covered? Not much. But let me point out that both sides of this amazing single are the kind of rubbery, sinewy weirdness that would be hard to duplicate today. For more context, there’s a great photo on the Phoenix Punk Scene website that outlines the instrumentation of the band; a clunky Danelectro guitar and a fretless bass. Combine that with some whacked out percussion and some truly oddball vocals/lyrics and you can almost hear the band by looking at the picture. It’s like Remain in Light era Talking Heads on about 50 hits of microdot. Like singer, John Glenn says, “I’m a sociopathic weirdo, I can’t get along with you”. At least he’s honest about it.

Jeff and Jane Hudson were two of the three original RENTALS, a band that formed in the fall of 1977 in Boston, and subsequently released their first single ‘Gertrude Stein, a great little slice of early art-punk from a city not really known for that sort of thing. Eventually, the RENTALS came to an end and Jane and Jeff decided to pursue their interests in analog synths. They began recording a string of very cool releases oftentimes centered around really ominous electro-pop employing early Roland synths and the TR808 drum machines. Both Jeff and Jane sing, and their personas match the music perfectly. Jeff has a quivery, drug-addled vocal style where Jane is more detatched and icy. All of the qualities I have just described are on display on this great 45 from 1982 that they recorded, confusingly, under the name Attack Under Attack. Los Alamos is the catchier of the two and reminds me of other Jane/Jeff classics like PCP and Gertrude Stein. But it is the B-Side, Operating Instructions that really catches just how awesome the duo could be. Over this really simple and intense sounding synth pattern, Jane instructs you on how to “operate the unit” in various languages. Her vocals are masked behind delay. The whole effect reminds me of some sort of mid-1980′s After Hours urban adventure. Jeff and Jane have a website and a myspace and it looks like a re-release is pending. This is good news, as most of the early stuff (like this) is hopelessly out of print.

Ahhhhhh Idoli. What to do with them? One of the bands that the mysterious Neso introduced me to way back in 2007 when I got schooled in the ways of Yugo Punk. Since then I have tracked down a lot of the bands listed in that fateful post and have become a pretty big fan of Paraf, Pekinska Patka, Panktri, and to a lesser degree Prljavo KazaliÅ¡te. Two bands I spent a lot of time tracking down were Electricini Orgazm, who were one of my favorite bands on the Artisticka Radna compilation, and Idoli. I’ve been unsuccessful thus far in finding Electricini Orgazm’s early stuff (hint, hint) but I came across this release a while back, which was a bit of a hit in that area of the world. Now, I have never been a big fan of ska, I like it in small doses but easily get bored with it and the A-Side of this single is definitely ska. However, it is also very, very Eastern European in how it approaches the ska. Check out the video below and tell me when the drummer starts shaking the maracas at 2:15, that you are not suddenly sitting in some village in Herzegovina. So, its kinda weird ska. A lot of other old cold-war era videos are available on youtube by Idoli and the videos, along with their graphics (including the one for this 7inch), really convey a band that had one foot in the new wave and another foot in the traditional music of their native country. A country that no longer exists in the same state it did then and even then was under partial control of the Soviet Union. So once again, art transcends the affairs of man and state. I guess this is why political conservatives generally under-value it.

Man I can’t believe it took me so long to post something by these guys. One of the finest ensembles to ever come from my hometown of Saint Louis, the Beatoffs are Stan Seitrich from Drunks With Guns and Fritz Noble from White Suburban Youth. Now I never knew these guys personally but I used to know another member of Drunks and he used to supply me with early Beatoff records like Lick My Butthole and Practicing to be a Doctor, back in the late 1980s / early 1990s. It was all very similar to a lot of the weird noise shit that was coming out in the midwest at the time, particularly on labels like Treehouse and AmRep up in Minneapolis but it also had a uniquely St Louis vibe to it. Stan and Fritz were both pretty big hermits. Definitely not “scenesters”. They liked to hang out at home, as depicted on this record cover, and be fucking prolific. Shit-talking hipsters (something there has always been a surplus of in St Louis) used to complain that the best thing about the Strangulated Beatoffs were their song titles. Granted song titles like Shake Your Dick and Beat Me With A Rumproast are pretty friggin’ awesome but the tunes man, the tunes! I mean for sensitive acoustic tunefulness about auto-erotic asphyxiation, you can’t do much better than Strangle Me. So once again, shit-talking hipsters FAIL. Change the channel to the Brady Bunch and shake your dick along with the Strangulated Beatoffs!

What the fuck is this? Well its a totally whacked out French-synth obscurity, that’s what. Back in the day when all the whacked out synth obscurities had to have a Chinese theme. You think I’m kidding? I’m not. Who is Henriette Coulouvrat? I don’t really know. She is on the great Des Jeunes Gens Modernes compilation with a more overproduced song that I do not like as much. Why am I posting this? Cuz I like to Rock On The Red Book and hang out in the Paddy Fields as much as the next guy. I think these songs should have been on the classic Tin Drum LP by Japan. It could have lightened the mood a bit. I love David Sylvian and all, but does State-sponsored paddy farming really need to be such a dire subject? Indoctrination into Maoism doesn’t always have to be thru the barrel of a gun. Analog synths can be the hammer which we use to crush the enemy! Look at the cover of this great release (if you click it, you can see the full-res version). Doesn’t that look like fun? Sure as hell beats a Decembrists gig.

I’ve finally gotten around to uploading some more stuff so I should have a string of posts here for a bit. Hmmmm….what colossal, epic extract of musical manna do I begin with? Von Beat on VVV Records, of course. Home of KBD-Fanboy bands like Bobby Soxx, Non Compos Mentos and The Ejectors. Now Von Beat probably isn’t as “punk” as any of those acts. In fact, it is most similar to VVV label-mates, The Telefones aand maybe the Delinquents from down in Austin and Los Reactors up in Oklahoma. Synth-led new wave, ermm sorry, nuke wave, with a pogo beat. Also, Von Beat wasn’t really a band as much as a one man show. Yeah, Von Beat is the dude’s name. From what I can tell about Von, he is trying to sound pretty “cool”. He’s adds these laconic little rockabilly flourishes to his singing for no apparent reason along with a slight Texas drawl. Its one of those instances where I think the singer is trying to sound “cool” and “rockin” but just sounds like a “dork” and “spazzy”. But since we all know that spazzy-dork singers are really the coolest thing a band can have, Von Beat ends up coming full circle and sounding pretty cool. A masterful play on Mr Beat’s part, I would say. Wouldn’t you?

Y’know something that is just totally under-represented on this site is punk rawk from the 1990′s. Why is this? Well its cuz I sold out to “the man” in the 1990s. Duh. It was all pretty simple, really. See, I was as hardcore as the next schmoe in the 1980s. I loved bands like Decry, DI, The Big Boys, Battalion of Saints, you name it. Shit I even liked me some Uniform Choice. But then the jock-core thing happened with the hooded sweatshirts, Yankees caps and such and I just couldn’t abide. I tried really. I bought a couple of albums by bands like Insted and Bold. But in the end I just wasn’t hardcore enough. So I started getting wasted alot and listening to Chrome, Hawkwind and various Amphetamine Reptile releases. Eventually however, I got tired of eating ramen noodles and smelling like cat piss and that is when I sold out. I remember it like it was yesterday. I went to downtown Columbus, Ohio (where I was living at the time) and I entered the big Nationwide Insurance skyscraper. I took the elevator to the 73rd floor where I entered a big long cavernous office at the end of which sat “the man”. He asked me to rebuke hardcore and had me spit on a photograph of John Porcell. I did as he asked. He then confiscated my oxblood, 14 eye Doc Martens and showed me the door. As I left the building I had an unquenchable urge to listen to some trip-hop. It wasn’t until years later that I saw the error of my ways. Today, I listen to this 7inch by Miami’s The Stun Guns and I think to myself, “why…oh, why?” Hindsight is 20/20 I guess. How low can a punk get?

NOTE: The original ‘official’ STUN GUNS LP w/ silk screened covers on Shut Up Records (2003) is out of press BUT you can get the repress through http://www.shutuprecords.com It has both 7″s unreleased songs/comp tracks + an EAT cover! The 90’s were not the 80’s were not the 00’s but whatever, right? The Stun Guns featured members of older Florida bands Lethal Yellow/Broken Talent and the Trash Monkey’s plus same era-band Chickenhead

I’m gonna review it anyway because its a FUCKIN’ ENDTABLES RE-ISSUE

A lot has already been said on various interweb sources about The Endtables recently. See, Drag City has recently released a compilation of the bands material that includes all six songs from their 1979 recording session in Louisville, KY. Two of these songs, White Glove Test and Trick or Treat were released on a bootleg in 1991 on Self-Destruct Records. The other four songs make up their seminal self-titled 7inch EP that was released on their own Tuesday Records imprint in 1979. The Drag City record is rounded out by a by a bunch of amazing unreleased live tracks and a couple of videos that will blow your mind.

But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Most of us non-Kentuckians were introduced to The Endtables on the classic Bloodstains Across The Midwest bootleg back in the 1990s and we were all a little bit confused. It’s the exact opposite of “punk-by-numbers”. The track in question, entitled Process of Elimination made absolutely no sense to me what with its treble-damaged guitar riffage and David Thomas style-warbling. Here was a real “what-the-fuck-is-this” sort of discovery. I remember it like it was yesterday. An experience I later found is common for fellow Endtable afficionados.

Compounded on top of the inherent weirdness of the music was the sheer genius of the record cover which is so cool, Drag City went and made it the cover of this new re-release. We’re talking archetypal punk photography here, peoples. In fact, it reminds me of the back cover of the Germs album GI, in the sense that there are four mug shots of the band and these mug-shots capture the personalities of the performers perfectly.

On GI, Pat and Darby sneer at you. These are the guys in high school that sold you rat poison and told you it was acid. Don Bolles looks at you dead on. He’s the kid who ate the rat poison (and probably still tripped his balls off). Lorna Doom stares off to the side. She’s beautiful and glamorous in that “City of Lost Angels” sort of way. It’s a brilliant coup because it captures the essence of the personalities that make up the band. While listening to GI, you repeatedly find yourself drawn to the photos on the back. It’s style is its substance. It’s perfect.

Now, take a look at the cover of the Endtables 7inch and ask yourself, is the same thing happening here? What do these photos say about this band? Drummer Steven Jan Humphrey occupies the top left corner. He looks like a thug who is contemplating kicking your ass. To his right is the guitarist, Alex Durig and he looks at you dead on. Where The Germs traded in Hollywood larger-than-life glamour, Alex appears to be a nondescript Midwestern dude with feathered hair. Look at his eyes though. He knows that he is engaged in something completely subversive. Below Alex is his little brother Albert who was only 15 at the time of this release. Albert is the only one smiling in his mug-shot. He’s just a kid along for the ride and he’s riding with some crazy motherfuckers, the craziest of which is to his left. Steve Rigot the singer is in extreme close-up. He peers up at you malevolently with his leather jacket collar popped up, like one of the bad guys in the original Mad Max . The eyeliner only adds to the creepy aryan-murderer vibe he has on the cover of this EP.

When you listen to the tracks on the Endtables 7inch, especially Circumcision, and you look at the pictures of the band, you rapidly start to wonder how the fuck something like this could come to be in Midwestern America circa 1979. I mean Circumcision is such a completely depraved song. But not only are the lyrics depraved, the structures of the songs themselves are completely off-the-wall. Were these guys listening to any other bands at the time? Because they don’t sound like it. This is pretty damn far removed from The Ramones.

A few years back, I was introduced formally to Louisville’s punk past with the release of Bold Beginnings and it’s been a pretty solid relationship ever since. I found out at that time, that with the possible exception of Malignant Growth, none of the original Louisville bands sounded like anything else going on anywhere and I have gone to the town a number of times to try to understand how this could happen. The city seems to have a long tradition of doing its own thing whether it’s the nihilistic no-wave of Circle X or the off-kilter weirdness of Your Food and even recently with bands like Verktum. But even from this perspective, The Endtables weirdness reigns supreme.

The other thing I discovered upon looking at the jacket of Bold Beginnings was that Steve Rigot is transgendered. Now if you were Alex Rigot in 1978 Kentucky and you knew a 400 pound, 6’7” hermaphrodite who wrote songs about circumcision and he wanted to form a band with you, would you? What kind of music would you compose? Would you get your little brother and one of your toughest friends and form a punk band? Or would you have second guessed yourself and not pursued any of it because it was something that just should not, in any normal conception of the universe, be?

I can tell you what most kids would have done back then. They would have smoked weed and looked at CHIPS. Reason being that kids are just little people and most people are chumps.

Luckily for us Alex decided to go for it. To pass up this opportunity would have made him a chump for life. Something that he and the rest of The Endtables clearly weren’t. You shouldn’t be a chump either. You should buy the CD and let your freak flag fly. Life is too short for “punk-by-numbers”. Break the figurine.

Another season, another Last Days of Man on Earth podcast. This represents the fourth one, which if you’re doing your math, means I’ve been doing this for a year now. Shit, time flies when you are having fun. This one in particular is a whopper. All the major regions of the world are represented on this mug; Arkansas, Missouri, Indiana, Wisconsin, Kentucky. Shit I even found music from some out of the way places like London, Paris and NYC. Amazing, really. So where do I start?

Let’s start with Eric Jensen, the Art Amiss Music Director at KXUA 88.3FM in Little Rock, Arkansas who compiled, produced, and released a 22 song compilation of Arkansas punk bands recently that is available here. The comp is mostly of current groups, but also of a few from the past including Arkansas’ first punk band, The Malls from 1980 who do a great song called Take Dope. Another great band from Arkansas would be A+ Setup, at least if their song Relax About the Afterlife is any indication. The Plaid Jackets are less unique but a lot of fun and they do Jerkface. Who are the mysterious Egyptr? Going to their myspace just creeped me out. True skronk from the same state as Wal Mart. Then there are the Kill Crazies, who all wear masks and sing songs about killing people. This is really just a sample of the cool music coming from Arkansas. Who da thunk? Go check it out. Don’t walk…run.

“Flea Bomb” by Prizzy Prizzy Please from their excellent first album

But if you’re running, make sure to buy a pair of New Shoes. Maybe from Indiana’s own Prizzy Prizzy Please? Off their amazing new LP Chroma Cannon no less. How about Severance Package? A really great band from California who recently released an awesome 3 Song EP on Shut Up Records. A very similar band would be The Lash Outs from Texas, who I have featured before. Well, the new stuff sounds amazing and I am looking forward to hearing their new masterpiece in its entirety. Child Bite are coming out with a new LP shortly as well. Odd Inn is a taster of things to come. The Zygoteens have recently released a great split with fellow Wisconsinites The Hussy (also on the podcast). All awesome.

The Hussy = Wisconsin

Then of course there is Louisville, and Noise Pollution in particular, who have just released a great free sampler on Thinkindie.com. What are you waiting for? Go get you one. Then you too can enjoy the godlike majesty of Second Story Man, the noir-like prog of The Web, the avant-power of the Straight A’s and Chime Hours, all of which are also featured on this podcast.

Egg Chef from Belleville, IL

Extra thanks to Acute Records mainman Dan Selzer for the tip on Mazing Vids. What a great band! I like watching mazing vids while eating eggs. Shit, I better call me an Egg Chef. I hear they have one in Belleville, IL who serve up a mean quiche of post-hardcore weirdness. Left of center a bit, are The Dissociates with some surprisingly potent post-punk from the UK. Follow the link and get their EP for free! Thanks to Chris at the Small Takeover for the tip. The Gary are from Texas and I like bands from Texas as well. Especially when they channel some sort of weird late-80’s underground guitar rock vibe. Sandie Trash are from Paris, I believe. Not Paris, Texas either. I was introduced to them on the amazing Des Jeunes Gens Modernes compilation which is going to inspire a future Bastille Day post, I think.

Stationary Odyssey throwing a party

You can’t stop Stationary Odyssey. They know how to throw a party as evidenced by the above video and they know how to rock a T Rex cover. If Spelling Bee tried to cover another band it would be unrecognizable. That is because Spelling Bee sound like nobody else. How can two people make that much noise? After Spelling Bee, Psychobuildings sounds positively conventional and that is kind of insane really. Total Noise are actually quite tuneful. How ironic. The Choke got hooks and looks to spare. I love bowery level scuzz soap operas set to a punk backbeat. Check out this video for further drama.

Next podcast is in the summer!

This one is for Steve Almaas Completists. Well, I guess that is dependent on whether there is any such things as a “Steve Almaas Completist”? But for the sake of this post, lets assume that there is. And let’s say that said Completist was such a fanatical fan of the Suicide Commandos and the early Beat Rodeo material, that upon finding this record at Roadrunner Records on a visit to the Twin Cities, said Completist had to buy it immediately. What then would said Completist think of this? How the fuck should I know? Personally, I always thought the Suicide Commandos were a bit over-rated. Getting there first does give you some bragging rights but they lacked songs baby and the production on Make A Record lacks punch. The Beat Rodeo stuff? Too dang reverential for me. My favorite Almaas stuff up to this point has always been the material on Big Hits of Mid-America he did at the end of his Commando run. Shortly after recording those, the band broke up and Steve joined Crackers, who add just the right amount of grease to Steve’s pop sensibilities. So if you are a Steve Almaas Completist, then this is probably one you should hear. Unfortunately, Steve was only in Crackers long enough for this one EP before he left Minneapolis and headed East to Hoboken to hang with Richard Barone and the Bongos posse. Barone and Almaas then went down to North Carolina and boogied with Mitch Easter who was busy creating this “New South” thing. A few years later REM had a couple of hits and kick-started alternative nation which became indie rock. So if you are looking for someone to blame for Vampire Weekend and Fleet Foxes, it is clearly Steve. Kapische?
